Channel discovery happened without a problem in the case of the pearified/Smarty attempt. Line 1376 of Installer.php appears to specifically deal with FTP installation of package 2.0-type packages.

This bug has been fixed in CVS. In case this was a documentation problem, the fix will show up at the end of next Sunday (CET) on pear.php.net.
