... works

I can not seem to reproduce this. At least not the pear list problem. Could it be that your cache is perhaps a bit off? [2010-05-11 10:58 UTC] cweiske

I did a clear-cache, but that did not help. After installation, "pear list" shows ssh2 again.

Happens with your new PEAR version as well with 1.9.0
Strange thing:
$ pear install pecl/ssh2-beta
...
install ok: channel://pear.php.net/ssh2-0.11.0
