With my code (attached) I get an
Fatal error: Class 'PEAR' not found in /path/to/Auth/HTTP.php on line 324
Seems like Auth is not including PEAR and Auth_HTTP didn't care either. There are 2 references to PEAR, each with raiseError.
Test script:

require_once "Auth/HTTP.php";
/** File_Authbasic is my own adaptor for Auth */
$auth = new Auth_HTTP("File_Authbasic" ,$path_to. ".htgroup");
$auth->start();
Actual result:
