If I change the first color from #000000 to anything else, the anti aliasing goes away.

This bug has been fixed in CVS. If this was a documentation problem, the fix will appear on pear.php.net by the end of next Sunday (CET). If this was a problem with the pear.php.net website, the change should be live shortly. Otherwise, the fix will appear in the package's next release. The problem was with how http://php.com/imagettftext disables anti-aliasing by assigning a negative value to the color index. Since black is index 0, multiplying it by -1 doesn't help.
