Description: ------------ See http://news.php.net/php.pear.webmaster/6152 & followups The current front page of pear.php.net fails to answer the *what are we* *why do you want us* *heres how to get us* quickly and easily. See what can be improved in this area. Similar sites that do this well: PHP.net ("What is PHP", "here's a tutorial", "download latest") Rubyonrails.org (boo, hisss) See also: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clockwerx/2340532410/

The idea is not bad, this is something I've thought about in the past but never went with since I didn't want to mess too much with the interface but now I'm prepared to do something radical. ATM what hinders us the most is the news on the frontpage coupled with the release / most popular column ... we have to shuffle them around a bit before we do something fun like ruby or jquery or such projects. So lets keep this report open for a while, we also need to improve the developers tab ... atm it brings people straight to "accounts" which is not very optimal IMHO and needs some nice index page with some visual helpers and so on which would be a part of this bug report I think ? Or perhaps we should make a new bug report for just that.

Another example homepage: http://openoffice.org/ was rebranded for the 2.4 release in a similar fashion.
