Attached is still a work in progress and should NOT be applied to CVS. It's just gotten huge and I wanted to have the work reviewed.
This patch integrates patches from joror and additional patches to use case-insensitive regex and the Unicode flag.
More significantly it also includes the beginnings of a good set of unit tests, using the PHPUnit test framework.
Still required: more tests to exercise basic functions; tests to validate the functional changes by juror and myself.
